2.1 Eonic Effects: History And Evolution

Last modified 07/05/2008

We have seen a difficulty with the idea of 'theory' in and of itself, and have discovered in the eonic effect both a resolution of the collation of biological and cultural theories and a framework that can bypass the false theories given by scientism.

We do that by realizing the improper basis for a science of evolution in the claims for natural selection. The issue of cultural evolution needs to be built into evolutionary statements about human evolution, and the relationship of history and evolution therefore must be formally constructed in a new perspective. That perspective is provided by something that Popper did not suspect: the discovery of a macrohistorical structure of evolution in world history itself, the eonic effect. The result is not a set of laws of history in a purported scheme of scientific history, a version of Popper's historicism, but a matrix of empirical observations fretted by a systematic periodization called the 'eonic model'. This model automatically blends the causal and the freedom components into, not a set of laws for the making of predictions, but a descriptive map that nonetheless reflects a dynamical component. This model produces a complementary unity of the ideas of evolution and history, the one expressing a dynamic macro aspect, and the other the component of historical free activity.
