We have discovered a remarkable fact: work history shows a non-random
pattern in the emergence of civilization, and this pattern falls naturally into
an interpretation as a special kind of dynamic model. This model is basically a
very simple schema of periodization, and yet gives us a strong sense of the
coherence of history and also harmonizes the relationship between theory and
practice. We can proceed in the next set of essays to explore the relation
to the philosophy of history and the clearest resolution of history as both an
avenue to the science of history and at the same time a demonstration of the
meaning of evolution, the evolution of freedom.
